The banana flower bud evolves in the heart of the leaves in an inflorescence formed of a series of colored leaves - the spathes - arranged in spiral. The female flowers, at its base, produce the bananas ; the male flower, at the tip, is sterile. The fruits are parthenocarpic because they do not come from fertilization. Banana trees only have one inflorescence at a time.
