Flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum) can be provided from fibre flax (photo), which is grown for its fibre, and from oil flax, which is grown for its seeds. In Europe, fibre flax is grown in Belgium, the Netherlands, but especially in France (80% of cultivation). Its seeds are used to produce seedlings for the following year. Oil flax, cultivated mainly in Canada, China, USA and India, is used for animal feed and human consumption. Rich in fibre and essential fatty acids (omega-3), flaxseed is an excellent source of vegetable protein.
