With the air-turning technique practiced here by Robert Marichy, the turner must first machine a tenon between centers. This is a grip which allows the piece to be held only on the side of the headstock on a mandrel, a cup, a print or a plate. The wooden piece can also be held with a worm screw system, called a ‘pigtail’, which does not require any tenon.
