Fishermen with sleeping nets

0
The small artisanal fishermen in Marseille are often gillnetters who leave sleeping nets for a few hours in a defined area. They use different types of nets with adapted mesh sizes and varying lengths and heights depending on the seasons and targeted species. A gillnetter fishing in a three-mile strip collects 11 to 33lbs (5 to 15 kg) of fish on average per day. The fish are caught in the meshes at the level of the gills or the flanks, then the net is raised thanks to a hydraulic winch and the fish are released from the meshes and kept in insulated boxes (foreground). After each fishing outing, the nets must be checked and potentially repaired on-board.
