Kalpitiya is a coastal town located in western region of Puttalam District in northern Sri Lanka. The Kalpitiya peninsula consists of a total fourteen islands. It is developing as a tourist destination. Historical records going far back reveal that the peninsula was associated with maritime trade and smuggling escapades since ancient times. It was first colonised by the Portuguese in early 17th Century. It is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural town, majority of Kalpitiya residents are Muslims, while Sinhalese are the second largest in the town.
