Fish markets dominated by seven species

Every morning on the Quai de la Fraternité of the Vieux-Port (Old Port), fishermen auction off the fish they caught off Marseille's coast during the night or in the early morning. While the shipments are different every day, seven species of fish - sardines, anchovies, hake, red mullet, bluefin tuna, swordfish, and eel - represent nearly two-thirds of their fishing volumes. Bluefin tuna fishing (photo) is subject to quotas that apply in the same way for the large industrial fishermen in the Atlantic as for these small market fishermen in Marseille.
