The brothers of the Sacred Heart of Picpus accosted in 1834 on Mangareva and quickly evangelized the island, formerly under the influence of tikis and ancestral idols. In less than 2 years, it became the cradle of Catholicism in the South Pacific. The very energetic methods of evangelization of Father Honoré Laval have given birth to a dozen places of worship including St.Michel Cathedral, the largest and oldest historical monument in Polynesia.
