The ferruginous brown to dark red ferralitic soils of the Central Chain and the East coast of Grande-Terre are typical laterites in the Anglo-Saxon classification. Locally designated under the name of 'mining soils', they cover most of the Peridotite and Serpentine massifs of the island, i.e 20% of the total area of the territory.
