The pearl farms of Mangareva are almost autonomous entities whose fragile breeding is threatened by multiple dangers : predators, parasites, climatic conditions. The increase of the lagoon temperature can trigger a whitening of the corals as well as planktonic blooms responsible for massive mortality. As for the waves of tropical storms, they may destroy the facilities and contaminate the reserves of drinking water.
