The female zebra may calve a small one throughout the year, after a gestation of 12 months and a half. A peak in births can is observed in summer, when the vegetation is flourishing. The young zebra gets up within one hour of birth and stays with its mother for 2 or 3 days away from the group. This is time he needs to learn to identify its mother’s welts and to be able to walk at a sufficient pace to follow her.
