Surrounded by high cliffs, Fatu Hiva is difficult to accost. Yet it is this end of the world, the southernmost island of the Marquesas, that the Norwegian adventurer and anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl and his wife chose to flee civilization in 1937 under the pretext of conducting research on the distribution and dissemination of animal species between the Polynesian islands.
