Fan leaf and frame
0
0
There are two parts to a fan: the leaf and the frame. The leaf is the part made here in Point d'Alençon lace. It is, otherwise, frequently made up of several layers of paper glued one on the other or lined with a thin goatskin. The frame, here in blond tortoiseshell, can also be in wood, mother-of-pearl, ivory, etc. It is formed by small rods assembled and movable at one of their ends which can turn around a common horizontal axis, the rive. The rods are called strands, and their whole is the gorge. The leaf is glued to the flexible and thin inner rods. Two outer thicker rods called master rods protect it when the fan is closed.
