The shore of Rurutu, in the Austral Islands, is made up of imposing limestone cliffs riddled with deep caves, formerly underwater, which have been raised by an uplift of the earth's crust. Not very accessible and very northern, Rurutu remained away from the maritime routes for a long time until its discovery by Cook in 1769.
