Thanks to a mouth up to two meters wide, whale sharks are able to suck up to 2,000 tons of water per hour, and it is precisely there where they find their food. Before swallowing, they filter plankton, krill, crustaceans and small fish with their five pairs of gill slits. They happen to cough to evacuate the cluttered remains from their gills.
