For centuries, the Inuit of Canada have lived in almost complete isolation, in a world as fascinating as it is inhospitable. The presence of the first non-natives in the Northwest Territories is due to European whalers activities (17th century), development of the fur trade (late 18th century) and first waves of scientific explorations, particularly to evaluate the wealth of mineral resources of this territory (late 19th century).
