The fortifications of Mont-Saint-Michel, designed to protect the village and the abbey, were reinforced during the Hundred Years’ War. The ramparts are located to the south and east of the rock, but some defensive works are spread over the rest of the Mont. The fortifications do not encircle the entire perimeter of the Mont: they only protect the accessible points and stop where natural defences are sufficient. A place of pilgrimage, even in times of war, Mont-Saint-Michel has always been a military stronghold.
