Camargue is a flat deltaic zone that has always been subject to the influences and interactions of the Rhône, the Mediterranean Sea, and the people who have gradually shaped it. The manades were built and developed in the agriculture-friendly zones of leaching and alluvial enrichment of the soil by the Rhône as well as on the most healthy grounds, that is to say the highest sheltered from flooding. The geographical position of Camargue between the Rhône river and the Mediterranean sea and its lack of relief also subject it to winds nearly 280 days a year and to an extreme summer drought which condition the lives of the people, animals, and plants.
