Extracting the fiber from the flax

Scutching is an industrial process that consists in mechanically extracting the flax fibers from the outer shell of the stem once the latter has been stripped of its bark. It works through successive ginning, stretching, crushing, and threshing stages. Flax is a plant that does not produce any waste since scutching residues, also known as anas, are used to make boards or as bedding for animals. The scutching inaugurates a long process resulting in golden ribbons, thin as hair, which make the reputation of the Terre de Lin cooperative.
