The programs of archaeological excavations follow one another in the old abbey of Cluny. After an initial program articulated around the Carolingian aristocratic residence and the Marian chapel, operations were carried out on the site of the former infirmary in the gardens east of the conventual buildings rebuilt in the 18th century. These excavations made it possible, in particular, to date the first Marian church from the second half of the 10th century and to link the chapel dedicated to the Virgin to its function as a church for the sick. In 2017, during a shovel test, an individual monetary treasure comprising a signet ring and a small gold square was discovered.
