Exceptional strength

The strength of the coconut crabs' claws exceeds by far that of other crustaceans and is correlated with their body mass. By reaching 3,300 newtons in the largest individuals (8.8lbs/4kg) of both genders, it rivals that of the jaws of terrestrial predators such as lions. It allows them to easily break coconuts, rat or fish carcasses, small crabs and seabird wings.
