The cheetah is an exception : it is the only spotted feline to live strictly in an open environment and without climbing trees. Studies have shown that the more a species spends time in trees, the more likely its pelt is patterned. This is particularly true of nocturnal hunting felines that spend a lot of time in trees with a dim light. .
