The canalization of the Yonne river began in the 1840s but developed above all from 1861. To adapt to the evolution of river navigation and harmonize it on a national and European scale, the locks built at that time were subsequently lengthened to the Freycinet gauge at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries before being established at their current dimensions after the Second World War.
