Since the 20th century, the Corsican coastline has constantly attracted tourists and the local population. If the two main cities of the island, Ajaccio and Bastia, and the surrounding dormitory villages now comprise more than half of the island population, the coastal plains - once made inhospitable by malaria - have given way to a productive agriculture and seaside tourism has strongly contributed to the urbanization of the coastline.
