Sled dogs typically begin their activity between eighteen months and two years old and run until they are ten or twelve years old. They reach their fullness between three and six years old. As with human athletes, their performances gradually decrease with age but they gain experience and can, as long as their physical capacities allow, occupy less demanding positions in the team by joining, for example, the 'team dogs' of the middle of the hitch whose individual efforts are less.
