When a lion is at the head of a pride, he offers its protection to females and to its own cubs. He also spends a lot of time marking its territory to advertise other males of its presence. Battles for territories may be very violent. So males often take care to avoid confrontation and to minimize the risk of injuries. In the African bush, a minor injury may be fatal, lead to difficulties to defend themselves and to feed.
