The capital of France, Paris is also the most populous city with 2.16 million inhabitants (2019). Its agglomeration of 12.78 million inhabitants (2020) constitutes – with its suburban ring – the largest urban area in France and the European Union, ranked thirty-second in the world. Its population density of 20,545 inhabitants/km² is three times higher than that of London. This is due to the greater height of the buildings, the smaller number of town houses and the small amount of green space (2,300 hectares including the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes). More than 80% of French people now live in an urban area.
