Ancien étang asséché au Moyen Âge, il est situé au pied de l'oppidum d'Ensérune. 60 fossés drainants, créant un réseau de 80 km, se rejoignent au centre d’un drain circulaire. Les eaux, convergeant vers le cœur de la cuvette, sont évacuées vers l'étang de Capestang par un grand canal prolongé par un aqueduc souterrain d'1,5 km sous le Malpas.
