Estates established along the Rhône

The Paulon estate of the Blanc family extends in the municipality of Arles northwest of Sambuc between the Étang de Vaccarès and the Rhône. The reasons for choosing this location are common to the development of most large Camargue farmhouses and properties and linked to economic and environmental factors. The lack of building materials in this alluvial zone and the absence of a suitable road network due to the many swamps led to the historical establishment of estates along the river, the only practical route for transporting stones from the quarries like Beaucaire. Such choice also results from the absence of fresh water in Camargue, apart from the Rhône that very early became the starting point of a vast hydraulic network.
