Established in the alluvial plain of the Paillon and Mantéga, the city of Nice extends at the western end of the Mediterranean Riviera along the Baie des Anges. Surrounded by hills formerly terraced for crops, it is bordered by Mont Boron to the east and the Var valley to the west. Initially grouped at the foot of Castle Hill, between the Paillon and the sea in the current district of the old Nice, the city expanded following its attachment to France in 1860.
