The uses of the water retained by the Bimont dam in the eponymous lake are multiple. It allows irrigating 19,770 acres (8,000 ha) of agricultural land, serves as fire hydrants, and supplies the Gardanne thermal power station and several municipalities. The Bimont dam thus covers a third of Aix-en-Provence's water needs while two other thirds come from the Saint-Hippolyte branch of the Canal de Provence. Finally, the water reservoir of Bimont provides 30% of Marseille's water thanks to the Marseille-North branch of the canal.
