In Champagne, many timber-framed churches have one or more facades covered with chestnut ‘essentes’ (tiles). These include the church of the Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) in Bailly-le-Franc (1510), pictured here, the church of Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe in Lentilles (1512), the church of Saint-Nicolas in Outines (1512) and the church of Notre-Dame in Drosnay (17th century). All of them are built in cob and oak framework and their nave is often covered with flat tiles or Roman tiles, once common in the region.
