Tropinota squalida es un escarabajo de la familia cetónidos, una de les familias en las que se subdividen los escaraboideos. Se asemeja a Oxythyrea funesta; ambos son escarabajos redondeados de 1 cm, comunes, negros con algunas manchas blancas en los élitros y con pilosidad clara. Tropinota squalida se distingue por la forma de su cuerpo más redondeada, aunque con los resaltes de los élitros y la sutura central más sobresalientes y los hombros más marcados.
Las larvas blancas y blandas de Tropinota squalida se alimentan de raíces, mientras que los adultos comen polen de las flores.
Habita en el paleártico: la Europa mediterránea, Macaronesia, Oriente Próximo y el norte de África.
