Built as a penance

Around 1050, William, Duke of Normandy, married Mathilde of Flanders, his 5th cousin, in a union disapproved by Pope Leo IX. His successor Nicolas II granted them pardon but ordered them to found four hospitals and two abbeys in penance. Queen Mathilde built in Caen the Abbaye-aux-Dames (Women's Abbey), dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and her husband, now King of England, the Abbaye-aux-Hommes (Men's Abbey), dedicated to Saint Stephen. Since 1965, it has been the property of Caen's city hall.
