Built over a Romanesque church

Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat Cathedral rises its two unequal towers of blond limestone in the center of Mende. It was built from 1368 above a Romanesque church according to the plans of the Majorcan architect Pierre Morel. The monument is entirely Gothic, even though its towers are unequal in height (275 ft and 213 ft / 84 m and 65 m) and decorations. The largest, financed by the nephew of Pope Julius II, displays a great richness of gargoyles as well as the family arms. The nave of the cathedral consists of 12 rectangular side chapels and two octagonal ones. A Gothic porch replaced the bell ringer's house in 1896.
