At the very end of Cap de Barfleur are the old and new lighthouses of Gatteville. In 1774, a first lighthouse 82 ft (25 m) high was built and equipped with a fire fed day and night with wood and coal. Having become obsolete and poorly adapted to new lenses, it was replaced by an adjacent structure built from 1829 to 1835 through a titanic process. Some 11,000 granite blocks were erected 243 ft (74.75 m) high by more than 1,000 workers without scaffolding. The new lighthouse of Gatteville comprises 365 steps, 52 windows, and 12 landings.
