Eradicated in the 19th century

Until the 16th century, the lynx was found almost everywhere in Europe except in England. It was first eradicated from the Bassin Parisien (Paris Basin), then from the Vosges in 1650, from the Massif Central in 1875, and finally from the Jura in 1885. Not one remained in the 20th century, long before the wolf and the bear. Lynxes waited for their reintroduction in 1971 and 1972 in the Melchtal and the Chlischlierental in Switzerland to migrate to Jura again. Today, there are around 70 individuals in Franche-Comté and 30 in the south of the Massif du Bugey.
