Balance and postures

Despite the length and thinness of its legs, the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) has no problem with balance and remains stable even on just one of its webbed legs. Unlike other birds that land on the ground, the flamingo also adopts this position to limit heat loss by hiding a leg in its plumage and to sleep in water. This effortless posture for the bird also allows it to rest its other leg. Its body relaxes, tilts slightly forward under the effect of gravity, and locks in a particularly energy-saving position of significant stability.
