The common spruce (Picea abies) is a monoecious species in which the male and female cones are distinct but present on each tree. The male cones appear on the previous year's twig ; the female cones, initially erect in a terminal bud position, hang down when fertilized and eventually drop off in winter. When mature, their scales separate to release small, brown seeds with a winged membrane.
