The communication network of the Durance valley was strongly impacted by the creation of the artificial lake of Serre-Ponçon which cut many roads, destroyed the station of Prunières and isolated the population. The general overhaul of the valley's rail and road networks has led to the construction of 31 miles (50 km) of roads, 8.6 miles (14 km) of railways and a 3,031 feet (924 m) bridge to connect the two banks of the lake.
