Despite its ramparts, large bastion, and artillery cannons, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle was invaded several times. The last to conquer it were the Swedish soldiers, in 1633, during the Thirty Years War. They besieged the castle for 52 days. About fifty imperial and Lorraine soldiers and a fair part of the population of Orschwiller had taken refuge within its walls. Once conquered and burned down, the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg remained abandoned for almost two centuries.
