Entrance to the grand bastion

Once in the upper garden of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, a large staircase leads to the entrance to the grand bastion. Above its door, a lintel praises the merits of Kaiser Wilhelm II, who had the fortress restored. The bastion, defended with large cannons two of which are still visible, was built on the weakest part of the castle. It had to be able to withstand artillery fire from the west. Two other fortresses are visible on the neighboring summits from its north tower: the Ortenbourg and the Frankenbourg.
