Between ancient remains and Provençal Romanesque art

Notre-Dame de Nazareth Cathedral in Vaison-la-Romaine was erected in the 11th century on the site of Paleo-Christian buildings, the remains of which the workers reused. Exposed, the foundations of its apse indeed reveal sections of ancient columns. The monument was remodeled in the 12th century until becoming a remarkable example of Provençal Romanesque art consisting of a central nave with three bays flanked by two side aisles without any transept. Its shaded environment and the tranquility of its four-galleried cloister surrounding a garden made it an ideal place of residence for the canons.
