The coast leading to the Gatteville lighthouse is interspersed with quieter coves and beaches at the bottom of small bays. The border between cultivated land and fine sand is immediate, and the fields of the Normandy bocage face the impetuous winds of the English Channel. The land is protected from alluvial deposits by hedges, and everywhere the green competes with a rawer green where cows and sheep enjoy high-quality grass.
