Kaiser Wilhelm II decided to renovate the ruins of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle in 1900. The first part of the citadel to be restored was the keep. The emperor wanted it to be the emblem of his power, symbolized by the imperial eagle with outstretched wings attached to its summit in 1906. The renovation of the castle was led by the Berliner architect Bodo Ebhardt. He had the coat of arms of the Kaiser carved above those of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on the wall overlooking the main gate.
