Veules-les-Roses is nestled at the bottom of a valley on the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast). It was a village of fishermen, millers, and weavers until the 19th century, when the attraction of the Parisian bourgeois for sea bathing put it in the spotlight. Many artists, Russian painters from Saint Petersburg, poets, or writers tried to preserve it from the crowd. The playwright Paul Meurice received his friend Victor Hugo several times. A cave near his villa is still visible, where the writer enjoyed meditating and watching the sea.
