The exceptional richness of Grande-Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, in unique species makes it one of the world champions of plant endemism with almost 80% of endemic species mainly concentrated on the ultra-basic rock massifs. It would count more than 3,380 already listed endemic species and 200 to 300 others would still have to be discovered.
