The squirrel cage is a lifting device that served as a crane on construction sites from Roman times until the 17th century. It was used either from the bottom of the constructions or on a fairly high point on the site. Quick to build, the squirrel cage could be easily dismantled and transported. This system made it possible to hoist a load of at least 660 pounds (300 kilos) thanks to the movement of a single man.
