The courage it took for these young men, of barely 20 years old, to come ashore facing a deluge of fire cannot be overstated. Thousands of them lost their lives, never returning home. At Colleville-sur-Mer Normandy American Cemetery, all the headstones face Westward, towards the United States. Amongst these, 307 graves present ‘Known but to God’, for the identity of the soldiers buried under them would ever remain unknown. In the Garden of the Missing behind the Memorial, the names of 1,557 missing in the area are engraved on an arched wall.
