Aboundingly hunted for its feathers to adorn the ornaments of the Polynesian chiefs, the 'Ura' had already disappeared from most of Polynesia at the arrival of the Europeans in the 18th century. It was still present in the rainforests of Kiribati and in the Cook Islands. Only the island of Rimatara now retains a population of 'Uras' thanks to Queen Tamaeva Vahine (1893-1923). Living in pairs, they are classified as 'Endangered' on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List.
