Below, the beach has regained its tranquillity

At the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery, the 9,387 white headstones line up before our eyes. To think of all those young men who fell, below, on Omaha Beach, makes one’s throat clench. A marked path leads to the beach. There, we imagine the landing crafts loaded with soldiers wading ashore on Bloody Omaha on the morning of 6 June 1944. Today, the serene waves scatter across a beach that has regained its original tranquillity.
